Red Hot

Here's a little beauty from harpist Robt. Maxwell, best known for his version of Solfeggio, AKA the Nairobi Trio Theme

It's been a really tough month on the blogging front as more and more music blogs disappear. My days here are obviously numbered, and surely so are my days at PCL--as many of my favorite links are gone forever, I feel I have nothing more to share there.  Those people with small minds who can only see the black and white--that all music sharing is theft--continue to register complaints about all music sharing venues (what could possibly be in it for them, except some form of power over the impotence of the rest of their life? emphasis on the impotence, no doubt), and googl-blogger happily responds to all their complaints by slamming the door on the most interesting (and surely most visited) blogs. Charming little gems like this album (not in print, and not likely to be re-released) will disappear into the landfills in the future, and the world will be a little less unique and delightful for it.

Last week I felt that I had completely lost my passion for the music. My oversaturated hard drive crashed, taking away years of music collecting (despite the valiant efforts of my IT husband). Including all the originals I have posted here in the past. I found I really didn't care that much, and everything I was able to rescue started to bore me as well. I went to a favorite record store and was ready to walk out empty handed, and had to force myself to buy two albums I would have been crazy-excited to share not so long ago. This is the first (the second will be nowhere near as good). And the way things are feeling for me, this could very well be my last post here. I would much rather pull the plug on the whole blog myself and maintain what little bit of control I still have.

So if you've been putting off looking into the deep archives of the blog for some hidden gems, now's the time to download whatever you can still get. Don't bother using the search, I disabled the search function a while back to try to keep the blog under the radar.

Anyway, do download this album, it's a real peach. If this is goodbye, thanks to the small group of you who have been loyal and vocal supporters. Maybe I'll get my energy back and keep fighting the good/bad music fight, we'll see. The wordpress version of this blog feels like a sham, though.

I love your blog, and I'll be sorry if you leave. There've been so many times that a visit to your page has brought me out of a crappy mood. You have such a gift for uncovering the truly unique aspects of Americana.

That's an awful drag about the blog nazis with their petty paint-by-numbers shrewishness. How small of them.

I'm sorry to hear about your crash. I do recommend the external hard drives - just started using one for the same reason - for peace of mind. They're cheap now. I also feel for you with your weariness with the music. I have gone through times like that. It's usually someone like you that brings me out of it with something fresh and different. Selfishly, I hope you'll continue to keep your blog going, but I do understand the temptation to just walk away.

With all good wishes and many thanks for the hours I've enjoyed visiting here,
Guy

I figure I better comment now before you go away. Thank you so much for ripping every album, regardless if it's good or bad. Your place has truly been like digging through a pile of thrift store records. And you post them regardless of race, creed, stupidity, or genius.
Give yourself a pat on the back, cause I can't reach it from here.

Your Pal,

Doug

PS This is a great album! "Red Hot Harp" is the Robert Maxwell record that made me go search out for more. Download this one peeps.

What a hot album...really. And I, too, hope you don't leave us. I do understand how the blog nazis can affect all you folks who work like yeoman to provide us followers with these delights. But I hope you don't let the buggers get you down and out, and that you will still be with us for awhile. It's always a delight to surf by here and see what thrift-store jewels you've mined for us.

Owch. The Rapture has happened, just in the form of Schadenfreudian Therapy's exit....Terrible shame.

It's fascinating how a group of individuals work in the name of the 'Artist' when, in fact, the 'Artist' has already made all of the money they are going to make on an out-of-print item. The record companies have been the bane of the existence of the Artist for centuries. They pay the Artist pennies on the dollar for their work then purchase their already minimal stake in their Art for pennies on the dollar fully releasing them from any future earnings from their Art, giving them nothing should their Art come back into vogue. Unfortunately the best artists make appallingly poor business people and business people make appallingly poor artists but reap huge sums of money for very little effort. How much money does the Artist, or the record company for that matter, make from the sale of a used record anyway????? None.......

I sure hope you rethink your drink on this decision to leave. This blog will be missed by more people than me I'm sure.......

Your blog has been on my short list of favorites since I started getting into music blogs late in 2009. I thank you very much for Eddie South's penultimate album, Scary Leon Barry, John Muri and many other beloved and obscure artists.

The blog Nazis are urine soaked, arse-kissing, brown-nosing, authority loving shites of questionable morals and less brains. Their only talents are raining on parades and wetting themselves when told Rush or Beck are morons. What petty and small cretinous wastes of time they are. They're pointy haired boss wannabes, but can't quite make the cut on IQ. It would be such a shame to lose still another favorite blog to their stupid, mindless grasping.

Fight the good fight, but if you do shut down on your own, just know you will be missed.

Thanks for this and years of wonderful amusement. I think your ennui is perfectly natural as I felt it at times. Discouragement, burnout. (You have put a lot of work here)

There is a lot of real bad junk on the net and its mostly useless and depraved. Your whimsical blog has been a delight.

Hard drives, keep 2 or 3 copies. and with usb3.0 and esata expect transfers of Gbps

I'm very sorry to hear of your data loss, and I'm truly sorry to hear that you're discouraged and thinking of hanging it up.
Your blog has been a source of continuing pleasure and interest for a loong time, and all your efforts are greatly appreciated. The demise of so many interesting music blogs is dismaying, and there is still so much old material which the younger generation will never know of if not by means of blogs such as yours.
Your personal observations, opinions and comments have been witty and charming, and if this is the end (or close to it), please accept my thanks for all the information and fun you've shared.

You truly will be missed.

Well, crap. Whenever I have the blues, I pull up your blog, read your commentary (which, more often than not, makes me laugh out loud), and listen to your Soundcloud tracks. So I come here today, fully expecting you to cheer me up, and I find this.

I fully understand your attitude; I can't fathom why anybody cares if we're sharing records that will never again see the light of day as commercial releases, but they clearly do, and their greatest joy in life is taking away some of the joy from ours. I would express my feelings more graphically, but there's a lady in the room.

I truly hope you don't go away. But if you do, THANK YOU for all of the pleasure you have brought me since I discovered your blog. I will miss you.

(If you decide to stay, please know that the resulting smile on my face will likely blind those within a mile radius.)

How is it that creepy stupid people get to run roughshod over the cool kids?

You put a lot of stuff up here that made me really happy and I'll be very sorry to see you go. I wish you were living in the apartment upstairs instead of that crazy old bag who plays "Abba Dabba Honeymoon" all the time.

You're the best!

WV: unding.
This news undings my bell.

Wow, I gotta tell you, you made life more than just bearable; with all the crazy gifts you so unselfishly shared I was happy, not once or twice, but, many times!

If you go, go with the thought that there are many more of us out there that crave good nonsense at an alarming rate, and what's more, life always delivers!

But, it was never packaged quite like you and your blog!

A big thanks from me.

If you decide not to continue blogging anymore, I will be sad and you will be missed. I sympathize with your loss of data and I empathize with the diminished enthusiasm. I, too, have spent the last week wondering if I should just shuck it all and quit. I wish you well and selfishly hope you will reconsider...

I've been looking for this album for a while now. Thanks much.

Sorry to hear about your blog and hard drive troubles. When your passion for collecting music returns (and I'm sure it will) and you have any requests, let me know and I'll see if I have it. devlin.jamison@gmail.com

Take care.

Your blog is great, and often I just enjoy reading your comments. And you are right with the subject matter of downloading - I think people are getting the wrong attention. They're thinking of people downloading Lady GaGa or whatever, but what you offer (and others) are works that totally fell into the cracks. And what you are doing is a great great service to music, culture, and preserving a time and place - thank you very much for that! And I hope you keep doing what you do so well.
best,
Tosh

So sad to see you go. I have enjoyed this blog for some time. Enjoy the sharing very much and I LOVE your comments, knowledge, and insight. What a wonderful comfort to know there are like minded individuals out there like us that keep this amazing music alive. I'm so sorry that your system crashed. Is there anything your fans could do to help you restore lost music? We could mail memory sticks with tracks? I'm not technically savvy so maybe there is another way. Having a crash like that can be devastating. Thank you for your generosity.

- Michael
P.S. where can we DL the Maxwell album?

What lovely people you all are. I am really trying to keep going, maybe my passion for the music will return full force. We'll have to see.
The link is where it says "red hot" on this page, which take you to the wordpress blog which is where I may continue if this blog is removed. On that page click "red hot harp".

I hope this isn't the end. You've introduced me to so much good, and bad, music over the past few years. Thank you, so much, for the time and effort involved.

I have it on 100% insider authority from personal interviews that Robert Maxwell actually dubbed Harpo's solos in the MGM Marx Brothers movies. Thalberg did not trust Harpo's playing. His recordings with Joe Venuti are the prizes in my 78 collection.
DOWN WITH BLOG NAZIS!

baikinange said...

Robert Maxwell was born in 1921, and started playing harp at age 10. A Night at the Opera came out in 1935, meaning Thalberg would have trusted a 13 or 14 year old's playing more than Harpo's?
