Gammeldags

I have a particular fondness for the likable everyday Joe vocalist who sings with wit, humor, and dexterity with his language--Louis Jordan, Brazil's Gordurinha, Mon Rivera from Puerto Rico, and Sweden's Povel Ramel. (Tell me what other musicians you think fall in this category?)

I'm told since I don't speak Swedish, I'll never be able to truly appreciate the wordplay in the music of Povel Ramel. But even the non-Swede can hear the jocularity and facility with language in his music--he's surely the Swedish el Rey del Trabalengua, King of the Tongue-twisters.

Ramel and his cohorts have a great time with the music--I'm happy to have a studio recording of the goofy Ittma Hohah. And there are some familiar sounding songs here--Den Franska Biljetten is Phil Harris’ The Thing; Högst Uppe På Berget is some variation on On Top of Old Smoky, and Småfoglarne is a Spike Jonesish take on Mockingbird Hill. Fun stuff, no matter what your native tongue.

Nice. You would have to add Carmen Miranda to that list. Maybe Slim Gaillard.

I was thinking Slim also!!

I'm so happy that you enjoy Povel in spite of those obvious linguistic difficulties!

"I have two passions - number two (the other) is PREMIÄR-KAFFE"

Did I tell you he was a baron? No, I didn't.

Yes, these are fun. Thanks for sharing. I bet you'd also like Tobi Rix (sometimes spelled as Toby Rix). His vocals in Dutch are similar, but Tobi generally uses more familiar pop songs. Best of all, he has a set of tuned bulb horns! He recorded in the late 1950s for Phillips and can be found from time to time on YouTube.

I,ve been living in Sweden since 1972, my swedish is fantastic and I simply can't stand Povel Ramel.

Fy fan alltså!

I have some Tobi Rix in my collection, I like him! I'm listening to "When I'm Cleaning Windows" right now.

Robert, did you start with his music he did at the end of his life, or his older things? I love some of the youtube clips from his old movies. Or maybe he's just not to your taste.

D`accord, baikinange !

I found an EP years ago on a german fleamarket and fell in love with the music of Povel.

I asked my danish/swedish/norwegian speaking girlfriend to translate some of the lyrics, and she thought they are only slightly amusing and rather silly.
That didn`t stop me from buying 78s everytime I saw one, and I will stay a big fan.

Watch his youtube performances, everyone !

Maybe he looks a little nerdy, but I think he was a great character and definitely a good musician.

How did you come across him ??
Thanks very much!
Joey
