Can I tell you how much I hate this Sandy Nelson album? Grab from the turntable, Frisbee at the barking dog next door hate. New art form scrimshaw-on-vinyl with a rusty nail hate. Even dare I suggest it….Billie Holliday hate. That’s some pretty strong stuff. Go ahead Sandy-lovers, tell me how wrong I am like you did last time.
I should have remembered my last experience with a Sandy Nelson album when I picked this one up for 33 1/3 cents – which was take two Advil and have a little lie-down until my head felt better. His one’s worse-- Sandy’s “All Around the World With Drums” includes a visit to a boiler room, a factory that makes broken glass, along with the predictable music from cave-man times, man. Jeez! I just remembered, I have yet another Sandy Nelson record to deal with. I think I will attempt to rip the entire album without actually listening to any of it. And I will write a review too! I think I’m looking forward to this experience.
Oh, and Sandy is a stupid name for a man.

"...Even dare I suggest it….Billie Holliday hate"... Ohmygod!...If you are a woman, i must have you!...maybe even if yer not!...you are the only person i've ever "heard" that hates that smoky voiced dead junky's mutterings as much as me!! i am quivering...with lust...
It's that coy way she snuggles up to notes--instead of just, oh I dunno, just hitting the right note on purpose the first time? That's what sets my teeth on edge.
And yes, I'm female, but since I am part bonobo and was raised by wolves, you'd have to be willing to cross species lines. Oh, and there's the geriatric and morbidly obese thing, too.
hello breakfast! (sigh)
You are not alone in your Lady Day-hatred, Miss Part-Bonobo - I am a long-time jazz musician and cannot stand her (now, Teddy Wilson, her accompanist on her early sides? *Much* different story!).
Hey,I think yer pretty cool too! I was impressed when you revealed in a previous review that you know what a "bridge" is! And while I'm geriatric and morbidly obese, *I* was raised by hedgehogs, so we'll have to stay clear of each other.
Seriously, *thanks* for all the cool music!
I should have called this post "I hate women named Billie"! QT, there's one song of hers I actually like--she did some early sides with the Basie band, and she manages to do a straightforward and simple "If Dreams Come True" which is pleasant to listen to. Beyond that, as John Wayne would say, send 'em to hell!
Okay, I see the Billie ref, and she was a woman with a man's name ..
Girls names that bug me when they're applied to men are
Courtney [one of my favorite girls names]
Tracy
Stacy
and of course Sandy
Patty Duke played a girl who was playing football rathan just cheerleading [itself first a boy's thing] in the now obscure 19656 movie musical...Billie, based on "Time out for Ginger" [the musical "Hairspray" kinda reminds me of that teenage girl just tries to be accepted scene, I guess.]]
Sandy Nelson had a hit called Teen Beat.
baikinange,
Gasp! That means you hate Sandy Koufax: former pitcher for the Dodgers, Baseball Hall of Fame inductee, and all-around-nice-guy! Shame on you! Shame!
Besides that, you're cool. Nice blog. I visit it all the time.
Could you post anything with a glass harmonica in it? Or maybe a theremin? Thanks.

A factory that makes broken glass? Why don't you tell us how you really feel...
Actually, I think names that swing both ways are kinda cool. Well, not all of them. Jamie, Cary/Carrie/Kerry, Andy, etc etc
I'm not quite so sure I agree with the anti-Holiday sentiment, though. You're so unforgiving. I mean, I like her as much as any cigarette-stained, heroin-addled, dope running, ex-prostitute head case that I can think of.
I really just wanted to say how much I enjoy your place. And offer a recommendation.
Have you ever heard Screamin' Jay Hawkins 'What That Is' 1969? Maybe it's he and Henry rising from the coffin. Maybe it's his anti-Nixon diatribe liner notes. Maybe it's The Feast Of The Mau Mau. It's certainly not the Constipation Blues. But it is a classic must hear it to believe it album. Oh, to hell with the qualification. It is simply a classic must hear album!
Sandy was the kid from Flipper's name. He was a real square.
Wow! That was a really great surprise! I thought that it was about a jazz album (thanks to my verdancy, amplified by reading all these disaffection comments about Billie Holiday. Not to mention my amnesia not remembering which was the previous Sandy Nelson album).
"C jam blues", "Castle rock" and "Sandy" became already the distinguished favourite tracks!
And what an excellent stereo sound someone can enjoy (even coming from my humble laptop speakers)!
(I can almost hear you ripening: "Thou too, Brutus?" :p )
...repining...
I think the great Scott Walker played bass in Sandy Nelson's band. Is he on this album?
