There is so much to love about today's offering, beginning with the title: "Dave Rose Styled Stereo". The liner notes sing the praises of composer/arranger David Rose, whose "Holiday For Strings" is a well-known classic: "His greatness as an arranger is shown by the development of his 'My Dog Has Fleas"--this starts from the basic tuning of the ukelele and Mr. Rose has developed it into one of the most played semi-concert selections everywhere." Now THAT'S ingenuity!
You KNOW this one would have remained in the bin were it not for song titles such as the aforementioned "My Dog Has Fleas", "Spanish Onion", and "Da Easter Time" (which shows up on the album label as "Da Easta Time".) Undoubtedly an old Negro spiritual I've never come across before.
Side 2 was pretty much a wash, too many skips, but it's just some lame waltzes anyway. The good stuff is on side 1.

Rondo-lette records....a close competitor to Spin-o-rama records in the quality department, no doubt. I'm guessing they were tiptoe-ing around copyright issues, by calling album "Dave Rose Styled Stereo". And all that fawning over the composer in the liner notes, and the bandleader, Ira Wright, barely warrants mention. Poor Ira, as if the moniker "Ira" isn't enough for one mortal to bear.

Then of course the mall dealer's choice of sticker is an extra plus...obviously a relic before medical privacy acts. "Employ Epileptics"....should I go out of my way to try to employ epileptics, and note my preference in the classified ad? "Seeking School bus driver for winding mountainous country roads. Epileptics preferred".

Thanks Ange, good album. I love David Rose's music. It's too bad Ira Wright didn't get a little more credit. But I really don't think the band leaders of yesteryear cared as much about that as they do today. Al Kooper (formerly of Blood, Sweat & Tears) summmed it up best here-

Besides that this album looks very interesting, I must thank you for using an another uploader than Rapidshare - I just wonder why nearly ALL are using ONLY Rapidshare? For instance, I think Mediafire is really fast!
Thanks...
HA!
Delightful 1950's housewife music and
worth buying at twice the price. The Employ Epileptics sticker just seals the deal, thanks Baikinange!
Seizure later,

Ps. dug out some choice "party records" to post, don't touch that dial!
My Dog has Fleas was a Rose composition? Interesting. Of coruse the two Vienna tunes were famous non-Rose waltez [Strauss did one and I forgot who did the VOices of Spring but it was used in Three Stooges, and as an "Eat at Joe'"s neon gag in some 1940s Warner Bros.cartoons, sadly discontinued by the 1950s.
And LoungeTracks, convulsive pun in your last comments..
Agreed. Iwas shaking with mirth.
The sticker logo was a mis=print, it should read: "Enjoy Epileptics"
David Rose also ghostwrote many Capitol themes. Yowp's blog here will tell the full story.
Don't feel sorry for Ira Wright; he didn't exist. The David Rose recording was actually made in Hamburg, under the direction of Heino Reese, who worked for Hamburg Radio. It was then licensed out to zillions of cheap labels who all put their own pseudonymn on it.
